Antlers are unique appendages. They are shed and rebuilt at intervals, and are synapomorphic for all living Cervidae (except for the Chinese water deer, Hydropotes inermis , in which they have presumably been lost). The antlerogenic process is controlled by a complex interaction of fluctuating levels of several hormones, most importantly testosterone. The oldest antler remains are recorded from the early Miocene; these have been interpreted as non‐deciduous appendages because of supposed permanent skin coverage and the lack of a burr (a well‐developed osseous protuberance around the base of the antler, which is always present in extant cervids). The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that antler shedding was possible in these early Miocene cervids. Antlers of all extant and eight Miocene cervid genera, including burr‐less antler fragments of the earliest cervids Procervulus , Ligeromeryx , and Lagomeryx were studied. An extensive comparative morphological analysis of external features of the antler, and of the abscission area and the base of the antler in particular, was undertaken. The results indicate that a regular, porous, and rugose abscission surface at the proximal end of the antler indicates antler shedding in both living and fossil cervids. The antler shedding mechanism must therefore have already been present in all early/mid Miocene cervid genera included in this study. On this basis, it is suggested that the presence of a burr is not prerequisite in order to shed antlers, that the presence of perpetual antlers has not yet been verified, and that the process of shedding and regeneration developed with the first appearance of these organs. This insight is particularly important for the systematic classification of early Miocene species as Cervidae, because the absence of the antler shedding and rebuilding mechanism would exclude them from the taxon Cervidae and from any relationship with extant cervids. 1. How organisms locate their hosts is of fundamental importance in a variety of basic and applied ecological fields, including population dynamics, invasive species management and biological control. However, tracking movement of small organisms, such as insects, poses significant logistical challenges. 2. Mass‐release and individual–mark–recapture techniques were combined in an individually mark–mass release–resight (IMMRR) approach to track the movement of over 2000 adult insects in an economically important plant–herbivore system. Despite its widespread use for the biological control of the invasive thistle Carduus nutans, the host‐finding behaviour of the thistle head weevil Rhinocyllus conicus has not previously been studied. Insects were released at different distances from a mosaic of artificially created host patches with different areas and number of plants to assess the ecological determinants of patch finding. 3. The study was able to characterize the within‐season dispersal abilities and between‐patch movement patterns of R. conicus. Weevils found host plant patches over 900 m away. Large patches, with tall plants, situated close to the nearest release point had the highest first R. conicus resights. Patch area and plant density had no effect on the number of weevils resighted per plant; however, R. conicus individuals were more likely to disperse out of small patches and into large patches. 4. By understanding how R. conicus locates host patches of C. nutans, management activities for the control of this invasive thistle can be better informed. A deeper mechanistic understanding of host location will also improve prediction of coupled plant–herbivore spatial dynamics in general.  相似文献

In 2009, a group of local foundations, the school district, arts organizations, and the Mayor's Office launched the Boston Public Schools Arts Education Initiative (BPS-AE)—a multiyear, citywide, public–private initiative aimed at increasing BPS students' access to in-school arts education. Managed by a strong local intermediary with deep experience in education, this initiative used several complementary, overlaid strategies: direct service, system building, and community engagement—all of which were supported by a philanthropic collaborative of local and national funders. Today, 17,000 more BPS students receive arts education; nearly 130 additional full-time certified arts teachers have been hired; and district spending on arts has risen to $26 million annually, compared to $15 million in 2009. There is also growing demand from the larger community for more and better arts education. In 2015, BPS-AE produced a case study that provides a more detailed explication of the multitiered strategy it used to achieve these results. The study offers recommendations as to how other cities can involve diverse key constituencies to advance this kind of initiative, create leadership structures that support effective citywide collaboration, engage community stakeholders in participatory planning processes, leverage private philanthropy to boost public funding, and develop a centralized support system for school principals and arts teachers.  相似文献

The geometric and energetic characteristics of root surfaces of two wheat (Triticum L.) varieties, Al tolerant (Inia 66/16) and Al sensitive (Henika), were estimated from experimental water vapor adsorption–desorption data. Roots stressed for around 1 week at pH 4 without and with a toxic aluminium level (0.741 mol m–3) were studied at the tillering and shooting stages. Roots grown continuously at pH 7 were taken as control. The surface properties of the pH 4 stressed roots were apparently the same as those of the control roots whatever the root age. For the roots of both varieties, the surface area and total micropore volume increased markedly after aluminium treatment. The average micropore radius increased significantly for the sensitive wheat, whereas it increased only slightly for the resistant one. Under Al treatment the number of large pores increased while small pores were fewer for both plants, indicating a possible alteration of the build-up of root tissue. The root surface pores were fractal. The fractal dimension of the sensitive wheat roots decreased under Al treatment, whereas for the resistant wheat this remained apparently unchanged. The adsorption energy distribution functions had different shapes for the sensitive and the resistant wheat varieties: the sensitive variety had greater number of high energy adsorption centers, which implies that the root tolerance on Al stress may be connected with lower polarity of the surface.  相似文献

We used the ant species Myrmica sabuleti as a model to study the impact of electromagnetic waves on social insects' response to their pheromones and their food collection. We quantified M. sabuleti workers' response to their trail, area marking and alarm pheromone under normal conditions. Then, we quantified the same responses while under the influence of electromagnetic waves. Under such an influence, ants followed trails for only short distances, no longer arrived at marked areas and no longer orientated themselves to a source of alarm pheromone. Also when exposed to electromagnetic waves, ants became unable to return to their nest and recruit congeners; therefore, the number of ants collecting food increases only slightly and slowly. After 180 h of exposure, their colonies deteriorated. Electromagnetic radiation obviously affects social insects' behavior and physiology.  相似文献

城市公园是城市生态系统的重要组成部分和城市生物多样性热点地区,具有丰富的声景观资源。由于声景观及声学方法具有信息量大,成本低,低侵入的特点,因此其研究和应用对生态系统健康及监测具有较高价值。声景观研究通过总结生物声的活动或多样性来衡量生物多样性。记录了北京20个城市公园的春季声景观,使用定量方法描述了声景观特征与变化;测试三种了已被证明与生物多样性相关并被广泛使用的声学指数(BIO、ADI、NDSI)与植被群落关系,完成了城市环境中声景观与环境关系的初步探究。研究结果表明:(1)声学指数能够有效表征城市公园声景观信息,具有显著的时间动态特性,能准确反映鸟类黎明合唱等重要生物生态活动;(2)声学强度指数也具有显著的时间动态变化和沿频率梯度的变化,不同的频率区间反映了不同声学群落的活动信息;(3)植被结构尤其是垂直结构对声景观起着重要作用,垂直异质性越大,声学多样性越高。发现支持声景观作为公园植被状况的度量,强调了其作为生物多样性和生态系统健康状况监测方法,用于城市管理和可持续发展的巨大潜力。  相似文献

以大中小城市协同发展为特征的城市群已成为我国城市化发展的主要形式,城市化和农业作为城市群地区最主要的土地利用活动,其气候效应是国际研究的热点。然而过去研究多关注大城市的热岛效应,对更为普遍的农业活动以及中小城市城市化的气候效应认识十分薄弱。基于MODIS地表温度数据,以自然林地为参照,提出了一种可逐像元估算土地利用地表热环境效应的新方法,进而对比分析了我国三大城市群地区(京津冀、长三角和珠三角)城市和农业用地地表热环境效应及其驱动因子差异。结果表明各城市群白天城市热岛效应明显,地级以上城市年平均热岛强度达3.2℃以上,但最强热岛均未发生在核心城市。夜晚热岛效应明显减弱,京津冀和长三角部分城市甚至出现冷岛效应。农业用地在白天亦表现出明显的增温效应,特别是在京津冀地区,而在夜晚除珠三角城市群外,降温效应明显,京津冀和长三角地区平均降温2.3℃和0.7℃。虽然城市用地平均增温强度大于农业用地,但农业用地因面积优势对区域温度变化起控制作用。白天城市和农业用地整体导致各城市群温度明显增加,京津冀增温最高(4.0℃),夜晚二者导致长三角和京津冀地区平均温度降低。研究还发现各城市群城市和农业用地地表热环境效应时空异质性极大,主要受植被、地表反照率、气候背景和人口密度控制。本文对制定缓解气候变化的土地利用策略具有重要的指导意义。  相似文献

Chemical, spectroscopic (IR and NMR), and molecular characteristics of humus extracted from urban waste before and after compositing are reported. The main differences are in the contents of acidic groups and straight aliphatic chains which diminish in the composted material. In comparing humus characteristics of composted urban waste and soils, the only real difference was found in the elution curves on Sephadex G-100, where the ratio of 100,000 and 1,300 peaks was higher in the compost than in the soil curve. The finding suggests that this ratio is a parameter that could enable us, even if in a semiquantitative manner, to follow the humification process of the compost when its addition to the soil is not less than the autochthonous organic matter content.Research work supported by CNR, Italy, Special grant I.P.R.A.-Sub-project 1.
